Why your Calgary dishwasher isn't draining
A dishwasher that leaves standing water at the end of a cycle is one of the most common appliance service calls in Calgary. The causes range from simple (a clogged filter you can clean yourself in 10 minutes) to mechanical (a failed drain pump that requires part replacement). Diagnosing correctly on the first visit is critical — misidentifying a drain hose kink as a pump failure costs you an unnecessary part replacement.
Calgary-specific factors make dishwasher drain issues slightly more common here than in softer-water cities. The City of Calgary water supply averages 165 mg/L total dissolved solids — moderate hardness. Over time, mineral scale deposits accumulate on the dishwasher's filter mesh, pump impeller, and float switch, restricting drainage flow. We see this particularly in 5–8-year-old Bosch, Samsung, and LG dishwashers in Calgary's post-2010 infill homes (Marda Loop, Altadore, South Calgary, Ramsay).
The five most common causes of a dishwasher not draining in Calgary
1. Clogged or dirty filter
Almost every modern dishwasher has a manual-clean filter at the bottom of the tub. In Calgary's moderately hard water, food debris, grease, and mineral scale accumulate on this filter within 2–3 months if not cleaned. A severely clogged filter restricts drain flow so much the pump can't clear the tub. This is the most common cause of dishwasher drainage problems in Calgary homes. Fix: remove and clean the filter under running water with a soft brush. If mineral scale is present, soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes. We demonstrate this during every dishwasher drain service call.
2. Failed drain pump
If the filter is clean and the dishwasher still won't drain, the drain pump motor is the next likely culprit. The drain pump forces water out through the drain hose at the end of the wash cycle. Pump failure is common in Calgary dishwashers over 7 years old — particularly Whirlpool, Maytag, and older GE models. Symptom: you'll often hear a humming or grinding sound when the drain cycle starts, or complete silence where you'd expect the drain sound. Drain pump replacement typically costs $110–$200 in Calgary including parts and labour.
3. Kinked or blocked drain hose
The drain hose runs from the dishwasher pump to either the sink drain, garbage disposal, or air gap. If this hose is kinked (common after a dishwasher installation or counter renovation), the water has nowhere to go. If the hose runs into a garbage disposal port that was never knocked out, same result. We check the full drain hose path on every drainage service call — a 5-minute fix when caught early.
4. Garbage disposal connection issues
Calgary kitchens with garbage disposals are common in newer homes in McKenzie Towne, Cranston, and Auburn Bay. When a new garbage disposal is installed without removing the dishwasher drain knockout plug, the dishwasher has no drainage path. Also, a full or blocked garbage disposal can back-pressure the dishwasher drain line. Always run the disposal before running the dishwasher if you have this setup.
5. Blocked or improperly installed high loop
Alberta plumbing code and dishwasher manufacturers require a "high loop" in the drain hose — the hose must rise to the underside of the countertop before descending to the drain connection. Without this loop, dirty water can back-siphon into the dishwasher tub. Over time, backflow material can partially block the drain hose. We check and correct high-loop configuration on every drain service call.
How we diagnose and fix dishwasher drainage in Calgary
Our technicians run a systematic 7-step drain diagnosis protocol:
- Visual inspection of standing water level and any error codes
- Manual filter removal and inspection
- Float switch test (stuck float prevents drain cycle from initiating)
- Drain hose trace from pump to drain connection
- Pump activation test (manual cycle initiation)
- Control board check if pump receives no signal
- Garbage disposal connection check if applicable
In most cases, we identify and resolve the problem on the first visit. If a drain pump needs replacement, we carry the most common pump assemblies for Bosch, Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, and GE dishwashers in our service vans. We also carry high-pressure drain hose flush equipment for mineral scale buildup in older Calgary dishwashers.
DIY check vs. calling a technician
If your Calgary dishwasher isn't draining, try cleaning the filter first — it costs nothing and resolves the problem roughly 25% of the time. If the problem persists after filter cleaning, book a service call. Attempting to replace a drain pump yourself without proper diagnosis risks purchasing the wrong part (there are 30+ pump variants for Bosch alone) or missing a secondary cause that will cause the new pump to fail quickly.
