Calgary Winters and Your Dryer Vent: The Hidden Fire Risk

Calgary's deep-cold winter days when temperatures drop below -25C for a week or more create a problem that homeowners in milder climates never experience: the dryer vent freezes from the outside in. Warm, moist air from the dryer hits the cold metal of the exterior vent hood, condenses, and the resulting water freezes onto the inside of the duct and the louvre flaps. Each subsequent cycle adds more ice. By February, the vent can be 80% blocked, and the dryer's high-limit thermostat starts tripping mid-cycle.

The compounding factor is lint. Calgary's dry indoor humidity (often below 20% RH in winter, especially in newer well-sealed homes in Cranston, Mahogany, Auburn Bay, and Walden) makes lint behave differently than in humid climates. Instead of clumping and falling out of the airstream, dry lint stays airborne longer, travels deeper into the duct, and packs into a dense felt at every elbow. We routinely pull six to eight cups of compacted lint out of a Calgary dryer duct that the homeowner thought was clean because the lint trap looked empty.

This combination ice plus packed lint is the single biggest fire risk in Calgary laundry rooms. Lint ignites at around 400F, and a heating element with restricted airflow can easily exceed that temperature when the high-limit thermostat fails or sticks. Calgary Fire Department records show dryer vent fires spike between November and March, exactly when these conditions converge.

Calgary dryer maintenance routine that actually works: First, clean the lint filter after every load not just every few loads. Second, have the full duct (lint trap to outside hood) professionally cleaned annually if your duct run exceeds 3 metres or has more than two elbows. Third, in deep winter, check the exterior vent hood after every blizzard if you see ice on the louvre, the dryer is venting against a partial blockage. Fourth, replace flexible foil or vinyl ducting with rigid aluminum; flex duct catches lint at every ridge. Fifth, on gas dryers, schedule a service every two to three years to clean the burner assembly and verify the gas-air mix Calgary's high-altitude air is thinner than design specifications assume, and the burner can run rich without anyone noticing.

One more Calgary-specific note: if your laundry is in a basement and you smell exhaust gas, your makeup-air situation is wrong.
